The Montreal Bike Fest took place from May 30 to June 6, 2010. And since the entire island and cycling are more compatible than ever, this year’s theme — Montreall together — served as an invitation to participate in, experience and shape this Montreal cycling culture, which is now recognized worldwide. And of course, the call was heeded, as evidenced by the highlights of this 12th edition.
20,000 people defied the forces of Mother Nature and took part in the Tour de l’Île de Montréal, accompanied by 2,600 dedicated volunteers, to whom Vélo Québec Événements would like to extend a big thank you.
The participation of cyclists from outside Quebec increased by 5%. For example, a group biked from Burlington, Vermont to participate in the Tour de l’Île de Montréal. Many cyclists from Virginia and New York were also present. There was even a film crew from a Taiwan variety show at the start line of the Tour de l’Île de Montréal.
Un Tour la Nuit enjoyed unprecedented popularity, welcoming a record 15,000 participants!
The forum On the Move in the Community! proved a definite success, with 250 participants. It featured speakers from Denmark, France, Switzerland, Belgium, the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as five Canadian provinces in addition to Quebec.
Operation Bike-to-Work continues to gain ground. The workshops held at Place Ville-Marie, the World Trade Center, the UPA (Longueuil) and La Fontaine Park helped raise awareness among thousands of people of the pleasures of two-wheel commuting! More than 1,800 companies have pledged to promote biking to work year-round.
The Metropolitan Challenge attracted some 3,500 cycling enthusiasts, who covered 75 to 150 kilometres of loop routes, starting from Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines.
Vélo Québec Événements would like to thank the 10 boroughs and towns that made the Montreal Bike Fest possible.
To show its appreciation to its 3,700 volunteers — friendly and energetic throughout the Montreal Bike Fest activities —, Vélo Québec Événements is hosting a Volunteers’ Cruise on the St. Lawrence River, from the Old Port to the Boucherville Islands, on Saturday, June 12.
